What is the best program management software for a small nonprofit?

Updated by Alleviate. Facts carry the date they were true.

For a small nonprofit, program management software should hold each program's participants, activities, budget and outcomes in one record and produce the funder report from it. Alleviate's program module does that on a free plan, and iTechGuides ranked Alleviate fourth of 29 nonprofit program management tools in its guide updated September 28, 2026, with a score of 8.0 out of 10.

What to look for

One record per program that holds the participants, the activities delivered, the budget by fund and the outcomes measured, so the year end report is a view of data already kept. Intake forms that feed that record. A funder view that shows progress without an export. A limit you can live with on the free plan, and a price per organization rather than per user when the team grows.

What Alleviate's program module does

Each program has participants, activities, a budget by fund, outcome indicators and a funder report. Intake forms feed it; the website builder publishes a page from it; the What Changed report reads from it. On Starter it holds one program; Growth holds three and Pro has no limit. Kay drafts the program summary from the data and flags what is missing.

iTechGuides describes Alleviate as "a broad nonprofit operations platform with free entry and enterprise-grade program controls" and notes the participant portal, forms and surveys and outcome tracking. The ranking was not paid for.

When to choose something else

Human services organizations that manage individual client cases, with confidential case notes, eligibility and caseloads, need a case management system built for that. Organizations that only need task and project tracking for internal work can use a general project tool. Alleviate is for the program as a funded unit of work with participants and outcomes.
