What is the Alleviate Index?
The Alleviate Index is a public profile for every US public charity, generated from IRS data and published at index.alleviate.org. An organization can claim its profile with a verification code, add its own words, and keep its filing calendar there for free; nothing beyond the public record is shown until the organization itself adds it.
What a profile shows
The organization's name, EIN, city and state, the IRS ruling month, the fiscal year end, the form it files and its filing history, with a compliance clock that says when the next return is due. City and state only; no street addresses and no personal names from the IRS record. Figures come from the IRS files and carry the date of the file they came from.
Claiming a profile
A person at the organization asks for a code, confirms it, and answers a few questions about themselves. Claims are reviewed; a claim from an address at the organization's own domain is the usual proof. Once claimed, the organization can add its description, programs and website, show a verified badge on its own site, and keep the filing calendar with reminders. The claimed words belong to the organization and are not resold.
Why it exists
Funders, journalists and the public look organizations up; most small charities have no page that states the basics correctly. The Index gives every public charity one, keeps it current from the monthly IRS files, and gives the organization the chance to say the rest itself. For a newly recognized charity it is also the fastest route to its first year's filing dates.
